Baseline fisheries assessments of the Shire River, Liwonde National Park
Advance Africa was contracted by African Parks to conduct a baseline fisheries survey of the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Malawi.
The objective of the survey was to characterise the fish community with a view to setting up a long-term monitoring programme which could be used to analyse trends in fish abundance, species composition, and size composition. A gillnet survey was conducted, followed by fisheries data analyses. The project culminated in recommendations for the management of the fishery and the development of a fisheries monitoring programme.
