Aquaculture Master Trainers for coastal Kenya
As part of the EU-funded Go Blue initiative, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Kenya contracted Advance Africa to design and implement a comprehensive aquaculture training and capacity-building programme to support and strengthen coastal aquaculture value chains in Kenya’s Coastal Counties Economic Block.
The objectives of the assignment included:
- designing and implementing gender-smart, environmentally-focused, technical and business planning/management training courses for aquaculture Master Trainers in six key value chains: tilapia, prawns, milkfish, seaweed, artemia, mud crabs and sea cucumbers;
- preparation of fit-for-purpose training materials for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curricula aligned with specific aquaculture value chains in the study area and the needs of different stakeholders, such as technicians and extension workers; and
- a conceptual milkfish hatchery design, and delivery of training in the setup and operation of a milkfish hatchery.
The training courses were completed by 200 participants.
